Sawmill Equipment Fabrication and Industrial Steel in Redding

Redding is 162 miles up I-5 from our shop, about two and a half hours. It is the second-furthest metro in our tier-one service area, and the work here is dominated by one industry that runs on one kind of schedule: sawmill equipment fabrication for facilities that shut down on a planned annual cycle and expect everything to be finished when they start back up.

That schedule is the whole discipline of working here. A mill shutdown is a fixed window announced months ahead. At 162 miles we cannot improvise our way through a surprise, so we do not plan to. Everything gets field-verified before it is cut, fabricated against measured dimensions in Rancho Cordova, and delivered with the fasteners, the touch-up, and the spares on the same truck. A missing bolt at this distance is most of a day, and most of a day inside a shutdown window is a production week.

What We Build for Shasta County Facilities

Conveyor and material handling structure. Conveyor supports, transfer towers, decks, walkways, and the heavy structural steel that carries log, lumber, and chip handling. Mill conveyor runs are long, elevated, loaded, and abrasive, and the support structure takes real abuse.

Mill equipment supports and platforms. Structural supports for saws, edgers, planers, sorters, and dry kilns, plus the elevated platforms and access needed to service them.

The full detail

Access steel at height. Stairs, ladders, catwalks, and guardrail for structures where the working surfaces are twenty and forty feet up and an operator has to get to them safely every shift.

Dust and residual handling. Ducting, hoods, cyclone and collector support structures, and the structural scope for wood residual and chip handling systems.

Tank and vessel structural work. Access platforms, ladders, cages, and structural rehabilitation on water, process, and wastewater tanks, including work that has to happen while the tank stays in service.

Wear and abrasion fabrication. Chutes, liners, hoppers, transitions, and replacement components in abrasion-resistant material, built from the failed part when drawings do not exist.

Institutional and healthcare facility steel. Equipment platforms, screening, access systems, mechanical enclosures, and rooftop support steel for hospital and campus facilities.

What Redding and Shasta County Actually Make

Timber, at a scale that still defines the regional economy. Sierra Pacific Industries — founded in 1949 and the second-largest lumber producer in the United States — operates from Anderson, about ten miles south of Redding, and holds more than 2.4 million acres of timberland, making it one of the two largest private landowners in the country. Six of its twelve sawmills are in California. A modern mill is a heavily automated continuous-process plant: scanning and optimization, high-speed saws, sorting and stacking, kilns, planers, and a residual handling system that turns everything that is not lumber into chips, shavings, or fuel.

Around the mills sit the supporting industries — logging contractors, trucking, equipment dealers, machine shops, and the fabricators that keep it all running. Knauf Insulation runs a 500,000-square-foot plant at Shasta Lake, north of Redding, which is a genuinely different animal: continuous, high-temperature process manufacturing rather than sawmilling.

The full detail

Redding is also the medical and commercial hub for a very large rural catchment. Mercy Medical Center Redding and Shasta Regional Medical Center anchor healthcare for a region stretching to the Oregon border, and hospital facilities carry their own steady stream of equipment platform, screening, mechanical enclosure, and rooftop support work. The city's Stillwater Business Park, a fully pre-permitted industrial park near the airport and I-5, is the area's shovel-ready inventory — tenants include PACE Engineering, Frito-Lay, Cal Fire, and Beneficial Insectary, and Amazon broke ground there in August 2025.

The honest picture of this market is that it is smaller than the Sacramento or Bay Area metros and served by fewer fabricators. That cuts both ways. There is less competition, and there are also fewer local options when a mill needs engineering and fabrication capacity it does not have in house — which is the gap we fill at two and a half hours.

Getting to Your Redding Facility

162 miles, I-5 the entire way, about two and a half hours in normal conditions. Anderson is ten miles closer, Shasta Lake about ten further.

At this distance we work to a strict pattern. One thorough field-verification visit where we measure the actual structure, the actual clearances, and the route the assemblies have to travel. Everything fabricated in the shop against those measurements. The truck arrives loaded with the assemblies, the fasteners, the consumables, the touch-up, and spares of anything small enough to lose. Crews stage locally the night before a shutdown start rather than beginning a critical window with a pre-dawn drive.

Redding also pairs with Chico, 70 miles back down the road, and with the northern Sacramento Valley processing corridor. When multiple northern jobs are open we run them on one trip and spread the mobilization across them instead of billing it to each site.

Two Constraints That Decide a Redding Project

The shutdown window is the project. Mills schedule planned annual maintenance shutdowns, and that is when structural and equipment work happens. The window is announced well in advance, it is short, every trade in the building is competing for the same hours, and the mill starts back up on the scheduled day whether or not your scope is finished. Three practical consequences. First, backward scheduling is the only method that works: give us the shutdown date and we plan engineering, procurement, fabrication, and delivery back from it, with long-lead material as the usual binding constraint. Second, field verification has to happen while the mill is running — waiting for the shutdown to take dimensions spends days you cannot recover, so we come during production, work around the operation, and take measurements live. Third, we plan for bolted connections and pre-assembled modules wherever the design allows, because bolting is faster than welding in a window and it is far more predictable when the crew is working around other trades.

Access is seasonal, in both directions. I-5 north of Redding climbs toward the Siskiyous and winter can bring chain controls, closures, and genuine delay; the Sacramento Valley stretch of the drive gets tule fog at dawn from roughly November through February. In summer and fall the risk inverts to wildfire — this region lived through the 2018 Carr Fire, and fire season brings smoke, air quality impacts on outdoor work, road closures, evacuation orders that can shut a site with no notice, and tighter hot-work permitting as conditions dry out. Neither is a reason to avoid the work; both are reasons to build schedule margin into a 162-mile project rather than assuming a clean run. We plan hot work against seasonal conditions and confirm current requirements with the local fire authority rather than treating cutting and welding as always available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you hit our shutdown window from 162 miles away?

That is the question that matters here, and the answer is yes, because we plan the whole project around it rather than around our own convenience. Give us the shutdown date and we schedule backward through engineering, procurement, fabrication, and delivery, with long-lead material usually setting the critical path. Crews stage locally the night before the window opens instead of starting with a pre-dawn drive, and the truck arrives with fasteners, consumables, touch-up, and spares. What we need from you is the date as early as you have it — a shutdown told to us in January is a very different project from the same shutdown told to us in September.

Can you take measurements while the mill is running?

Yes, and at this distance it is essential. Spending the first two days of a shutdown taking dimensions is not recoverable, so we come during production, coordinate access with your team, work around the operation, and field-verify live. Then everything is fabricated against real measurements and arrives ready to install. It does mean following your plant's rules for being near running equipment, which we would rather do on an ordinary shift than during a shutdown.

We have a broken chute and no drawings. Can you build a replacement?

Yes, and that is a common request. Send us the failed part, or good photographs with dimensions if it cannot come off, and we will reverse-engineer it. For wear components we will also ask what failed and how fast, because the useful conversation is usually not "build the same thing again" — it is whether a different material, a heavier thickness, a changed transition angle, or a liner would extend the life. Abrasion problems are frequently design problems.

Do you do bolted connections instead of field welding?

Wherever the design allows, and in a shutdown we push for it deliberately. Bolting is faster, more predictable when several trades are working in the same space, and it avoids hot work in a facility full of wood dust and residual. We design for pre-assembled modules and bolted splices where we can, and reserve field welding for the connections that genuinely require it.

Is Redding too far for you to be a realistic option?

It is the second-furthest metro in our full-service area, so it is a fair question. What makes it work is that we treat distance as a planning problem rather than absorbing it as improvisation: one thorough verification visit, complete shop fabrication, a fully loaded truck, and local staging. Redding also pairs with Chico 70 miles back down the road, so when several northern jobs are open the mobilization gets spread across them. Where we would tell you to use somebody local is genuinely small, urgent repair work — a single bracket needed today is not a job that should travel 162 miles.

Do you handle preventative maintenance programs this far north?

Yes. Redding is inside our 300-mile preventative maintenance and EPC band, so scheduled PM visits, consumables, lubrication, safety-device verification, and facility condition assessment with photo documentation are all available here. For a mill, the natural fit is aligning PM visits with the production calendar and building a condition record between annual shutdowns, so the shutdown scope is decided from documented findings rather than from memory.
