Industrial Fabrication in Folsom, California

Folsom is 11 miles up Highway 50 from our shop — fifteen minutes, no freeway interchange worth worrying about. It is also the town where American long-distance electrical transmission got started, which is a reasonable place for an engineering company to want business.

Most people file Folsom under "tech suburb," and that undersells what is actually here. Industrial fabrication work in this city comes from three different directions: a genuine food and beverage process manufacturing base that almost nobody outside the industry knows about, a precision manufacturing sector, and a very large technology campus currently going through the biggest transition in its history.

What We Build for Folsom Facilities

Process equipment and support steel for food and beverage plants. Tank platforms, vessel supports, catwalks, conveyor and transfer supports, and the structural work that fits a new machine into a fermentation or bottling line laid out decades ago.

Sanitary and washdown-rated fabrication. Continuous welds, ground and polished seams, surfaces that drain, no ledges that hold product. Brewing, fermenting, and bottling operations get cleaned constantly and inspected regularly.

The full detail

Equipment platforms and mezzanines. Elevated platforms for mechanical equipment, chillers, pumps, and process support, plus the mezzanine steel that buys a growing operation vertical space it does not have horizontally.

Precision weldments and machine frames. Frames and weldments built to real tolerances, stress-relieved where the application requires it, and machined after welding when flatness or bore location is specified rather than hoped for.

Tenant improvement and campus conversion steel. Structural modifications, new openings, equipment supports, screening, and rooftop steel for office and campus buildings being repurposed for new uses and new tenants.

Architectural and historic-district steel. Handrail and guardrail from $140 per linear foot, ADA rail, steel deck and balcony structures, decorative and laser-cut panels, gates, awning and canopy frames — engineered, stamped, and detailed for design review where the project sits in Folsom's historic district.

What Folsom Actually Makes

Start with the surprising part. Kikkoman Foods has operated a soy sauce plant in Folsom since 1998, and Gekkeikan Sake USA brews sake here. Both are continuous fermentation process plants — brewing operations in everything but name, with the tanks, temperature control, sanitary requirements, bottling lines, and wastewater handling that implies. For a fabricator, they are the same technical problem as a brewery or a winery cellar, and they sit fifteen minutes from our shop.

Tri Tool is headquartered in Folsom, building portable precision machine tools for pipe cutting, beveling, and machining — the equipment that pipefitters and boilermakers use in the field. That is a precision manufacturing business with real machining and fabrication content.

Then the technology side, which is in genuine flux and worth being straight about. Intel's Folsom campus — roughly 150 acres, on the order of 1.6 to 1.7 million square feet across seven buildings — was once close to 10,000 employees. After layoffs in 2023 and again in late 2024, headcount is well under half that. Intel announced in November 2024 that it would sell the campus and lease back only the space it needs, and the property was formally listed for sale in March 2026 with institutional bids due that April. As of this writing the process has not publicly closed. Note that some local economic-development material still cites "6,000+ employees" at the site; that figure is out of date.

Alongside it, Micron operates a research and test facility in Folsom rather than a full production fab, and Agilent, Johnson Controls, L3Harris, and a VSP Global optical lab all have Folsom operations. Mercy Hospital of Folsom covers healthcare facilities work.

And the history is not decoration. The Folsom Powerhouse transmitted alternating current 22 miles to Sacramento at 11,000 volts on July 13, 1895 — among the first long-distance AC transmissions in the United States, now an IEEE Milestone, a National Historic Landmark, and a state historic park. This has been an engineering town for 130 years.

Getting to Your Folsom Facility

11 miles, Highway 50 east, about fifteen minutes. Iron Point, Blue Ravine, East Bidwell, the Prairie City Road campuses, and the historic district are all inside a twenty-minute drive from the shop.

At this distance we work the way we do in Rancho Cordova rather than the way we do at distance: measure in the morning, cut a template, bring it back the same afternoon, confirm the fit before committing material to a full run. For anything landing in a tight existing space — a platform between existing piping, a frame fitting an opening nobody documented — that iteration is the difference between a part that fits and a part that gets modified on site.

There is no mobilization charge to come look at something in Folsom. We would rather spend an hour on your floor than build to a drawing that describes the building as it was three tenant improvements ago.

Two Folsom Constraints Worth Planning Around

Historic district design review. Folsom has a Historic District Commission and a formal design review ordinance covering the Sutter Street district and its surroundings. For architectural metalwork — railings, gates, awnings, decorative panels, balcony and deck structures, storefront elements — that means the design has to satisfy a review body concerned with historic character, not only a building official concerned with code. The practical consequence is sequencing: design review approval comes before the building permit, which comes before fabrication, and each step has a calendar of its own. A project scoped as "fabricate and install a railing" can carry two months of approvals in front of it. We design for review as well as for code, and we would rather build the approval timeline into the schedule at the start than explain it later. Confirm the current requirements and meeting calendar with the City of Folsom planning department for your specific address.

A single-tenant campus becoming a multi-tenant one. The Intel campus transition is the largest facilities story in this city, and it creates a specific and unusual set of problems for anyone doing work there. A campus built for one occupant typically has shared central utility plants, a single distribution backbone, and as-built documentation held by the original tenant — none of which subdivides cleanly. Work for an incoming tenant may need to tie into infrastructure the departing tenant still owns and operates, sequence around occupied space, and proceed with drawings that describe systems as they were designed rather than as they were modified over twenty-five years. Our approach is to field-verify the utility and structural conditions rather than trust the plan set, and to scope the tie-in points explicitly so responsibility is settled in writing before anyone cuts anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you work on fermentation and bottling plants?

Yes, and there are more of them in Folsom than most people realize. A soy sauce plant and a sake brewery are technically the same problem as a brewery: tanks, temperature control, sanitary surfaces, bottling lines, aggressive and frequent cleaning, and continuous fermentation that cannot simply be stopped for a contractor's convenience. We build tank platforms, vessel and conveyor supports, catwalks, and sanitary-detailed structures for exactly that environment, and we plan the work around your production rather than around ours.

Our project is on Sutter Street. Does design review change what you can build?

It changes the process more than the product. Folsom's Historic District Commission and design review ordinance mean the design has to satisfy a body concerned with historic character before a building permit issues. So a railing or a gate that would be a four-week job elsewhere may carry design review plus permitting in front of it. We design with review in mind — proportion, profile, material, and finish all matter to that conversation — and we build the approval calendar into the schedule from the beginning. Confirm the current requirements and meeting dates with the City of Folsom planning department for your address.

We are taking space on the Intel campus. Can you do the tenant work?

Yes, and the thing to plan for is infrastructure rather than steel. A campus built for one occupant has shared utility plants and a single distribution backbone that do not subdivide cleanly, and the as-built documentation usually reflects the original design rather than twenty-five years of modification. We field-verify the structural and utility conditions instead of trusting the plan set, and we insist on scoping the tie-in points explicitly — who owns what, who operates what, and where our responsibility starts and stops — in writing before anything gets cut.

Can we come by the shop, or bring in a part?

Yes. We are at 2530 Mercantile Dr, Ste H in Rancho Cordova, fifteen minutes down Highway 50. Bring a print, a sketch, or the failed part itself — reverse-engineering from the actual piece beats measuring it in the field and describing it over email. Call (916) 842-7402 first so somebody who can answer your questions is on the floor.

Do you do precision machining, or only structural steel?

We build precision weldments and machine frames — designed for stiffness and dimensional stability, stress-relieved where the application needs it, and machined after welding when flatness, parallelism, or bore location is specified. What we need from you is the tolerance that actually matters and how it will be inspected, because "precision" without a number is not something anyone can build to. For pure high-volume machining with no fabrication content, a dedicated machine shop is usually the better call, and Folsom has them.

Is there a minimum job size?

No, and at fifteen minutes away small work makes economic sense here in a way it does not at two hundred miles. A single bracket, one replacement guard, a modified frame — all fine. The honest caveat is that a one-off carries its engineering and setup cost in a single piece, so the per-unit price looks high next to a production run of the same part. We will tell you that up front rather than after you see the number.
